This week in Brisbane 15-20 June
Big sporting games, festivals and expos combine this week to make it a busy time in Brisbane city.

The days might be short, with darkness falling early, so this week is one for nightowls.
State of Origin and the World Cup

Football, of two codes, is top of mind this week.

Game two of the State of Origin will fill Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night. If you’re a footy fan you’ll have your tickets and be seeing the game live. If you’ve missed out, check out our guide to the best pubs in Brisbane to view the action on the big screen.

After Australia’s disappointing loss to Germany, we’ve really got to get behind the Socceroos in their World Cup game against Ghana this Saturday (midnight).

You don’t have to fly to South Africa to join the fun (although our Brisbane blogger Hamish has done just that). But you can find the places where the World Cup will be screening in Brisbane.

Be prepared for some bleary eyed days after staying up all night to do your patriotic duty for the Socceroos!
Inhabit Fiesta

If you want to fall in love with Brisbane come and join the Inhabit Fiesta! It’s a celebration of laneways and the hidden nooks and crannies in our city. Artists are reclaiming lonely spaces and unexpected places, transforming them into vibrant hubs with events, performances and outdoor exhibitions.

Our arts reviewer recently took a pedestrian trip en route and loved the experience.

And this Friday you can catch free live and local music at Sounds Like Brisbane featuring sets from Blowhard, Texas Tea, Carry Nation, Fushia, Halfway, My Fiction, Nova Scotia, The Rational Academy, and The Optimen.
Brisbane Cabaret Festival

The Brisbane Cabaret Festival starts this week with some truly amazing acts. There’ll be 9 sensational days packed full with sublime chanson, edgy interpretations, musical magic, quirky characters and a little bit of ridiculousness to lighten the load.
Disney on Ice

If you have littlies, chances are they can’t wait to see their favourite Disney characters in Disney On Ice’s Disneyland Adventure. The show is on at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre from Wednesday until Sunday.
Expos and shows

Which will you visit first - the Brisbane Bridal Expo or the Pregnancy, Babies and Children’s Expo? Both shows are on this weekend. Brides head to the RNA Showgrounds and parents make your way to the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. If you are both (as is de rigueur these days) then you’ll be busy!
Winter Solstice Festival

Because it’s almost the shortest day of the year (June 21) it's time for the Winter Solstice Festival at Northey Street City Farm on Saturday night. Live music and a celebratory bonfire will be highlights of the party.
World Refugee Day

If you go to Southbank Parklands on Friday you may see the walk and lantern parade for World Refugee Day. It starts at Southbank cultural forecourt and finishes at Suncorp Piazza. It’s one way we can welcome newly arrived refugees to Brisbane, acknowledge the situations they left behind and remember the millions of people around the world still desperate for a safe place to live.
Do you have the X factor?

This weekend, if you are over 16, take a shot at fame by trying out at the X Factor auditions at South Bank.
Scare yourself silly!

If you’re over 18 and you love horror movies, head to Tribal Theatre on Sunday for a Horror Movie Afternoon, complete with horror usherettes and three gory movie offerings.
Long live the weekend

Yep, it's sad but true, the Queen's Birthday weekend was the last long weekend of the year until Christmas, many months away. But in the spirit of doing more on the weekends, we've launched a competition where you can win a great weekend to remember. All you need to do is share your favourite way to spend those two precious days.
